The Angora goat as we know it came from Turkey. The mohair goat became known as the angora goat because the best goats were raised in the province of Angora, presently known as Ankara, on the central Anatolian plains. The Angora goat produces a silky fiber called mohair. Mohair is a strong, lustrous fiber, the use of which results in beautiful yarn and cloth. It is stronger and warmer than wool and is not subject to shrinking or wrinkling. Mohair dyes beautifully, and blends with other fibers to create a fabulous yarn. I personally like to combine the natural and dyed mohair with my Icelandic wool to make a luscious roving that receives raves from hand spinners.
